EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Although we've been transforming the lives of our students for over 30 years, September High School remains an ongoing experiment in education. This experiment starts fresh each time a new student joins our community.
If you were in one of Rob's science classes, you might say the hypothesis of our experiment is that stronger relationships create greater success in school. In other words, we care about our students. We take the time to get to know them as learners and as people. Our students feel like they matter, and they feel like September High School is their second home. They settle in here, take ownership of the space and their education, and experience a new kind of success in their education.
Our students come to us for many different reasons, but the common thread seems to be the desire to get something more for their education than their previous school could provide. Often, they've felt like square pegs being forced into a round hole. We're not a school specifically for round or square pegs. Rather, we work with our students to explore what shape their peg is, and to develop an individualized educational journey that fits for them. In our ongoing mission to foster individual development, our school is proudly committed to an 8:1 student to teacher classroom ratio.
A primary task of adolescence is the exploration and formation of one's identity. Our programs are designed to provide guidance during these unfamiliar and sometimes turbulent times. The leadership trips challenge our students to push beyond their self-limiting beliefs, and become more intentional about their goals for their future. Our strong emphasis on the arts reflects our belief that they serve as an ideal medium for reflection and expression, critical components of a balanced approach to identity development.
We are not trying to control our students, or to tell them what they should think and say. Yet we believe we have created the optimal environment for them to develop their own critical thinking and their own unique voice.
September High School is an experiment in education that has worked for hundreds of teens for more than 35 years.
